Our estate vineyard, perched at 1700 feet elevation on Howell Mountain, not only represents the best of what this appellation has to offer but also epitomizes the Rudius philosophy. Structure. Depth. Ageability. The 2016 vintage as a whole is proving to be age-worthy but shy in its youth, and our Estate Cabernet is no exception. This vintage of the Savory Estate Cab shows that this vineyard can have a dark side — red fruit notes are replaced by rich cassis, and the palate is warmed by accents of clove and allspice. Every bit a mountain Cabernet, the tannin structure is precise but does not overwhelm the rich cacao driven finish. This wine still exhibits a certain femininity, uncommon to the appellation yet refreshing to the palate, but this will only show after ample decanting or, as we suggest, another 12-18 months in your cellar. Enjoy.
2016 Savory Estate Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
In the Vineyard
The Savory Estate Vineyard, situated in a cool microclimate at 1700 feet elevation on Howell Mountain, not only represents the best of what this appellation has to offer but also epitomizes the Rudius philosophy. Structure. Depth. Ageability. Planted in 1998 by two Napa Valley icons — David Abreu and Rick Forman — our estate vineyard epitomizes ‘old Napa Valley’ style with a touch of modern elegance. Clone 7 Cabernet Sauvignon combined with 10% interplants of Cabernet Franc produces a wine that is every bit a mountain red, but with precise tannin structure and a distinct femininity. Jeff Ames’ signature light touch in winemaking together with extended hang time during the growing season combine to create a wine that is both powerful and finessed. With each iteration of the Savory Estate wines, we hope to share not only our commitment to quality but also our decade-long dream of a Rudius estate with you.
