The 2016 'Kaley Elizabeth' is a classic Napa Valley Cabernet, showing notes of cedar, roasting spices and dark ruby fruits, with subtle undertones of iron ore, paying homage to its east Oakville origins. In this vintage, we blended more of the interplanted Cabernet Franc into our finished wine, giving the final blend additional body and aromatic lift, without compromising the inherent quality you have come to expect from 'Kaley'. The aromatics are driven by the presence of the additional Cabernet Franc with the notes of unsmoked tobacco and a vibrant lift of mint. You will find the palate dense and powerful, full of bright red fruits and seamless tannins that finish with an impressive smoothness considering the wine's youth. The 2016 Kaley Elizabeth will likely require less time than previous vintages in the cellar before reaching drinkability, but with additional aging through 2030, will very likely reward more than years past.
2016 Kaley Elizabeth Cabernet - Oakville
In the Vineyard
Perched just above Silverado Trail in Oakville’s sun-soaked eastern hills, the vineyard that produces our Kaley Elizabeth Cabernet is truly one of a kind. Planted in 1988 on terraces cut into the brick-red clay soils indicative of this sub-appellation, the vines here have been painstakingly maintained over the last nearly three decades. Few Cabernet vineyards in the Napa Valley have such an abiding sense of history and commitment to quality. Clone 7 — a favorite of farmers in the 80s and 90s — delivers consistently rich, bold fruit from year-to-year, while the incredibly well-drained, fractured soil of the terraces adds just the right amount of stress over the growing season. The result: a wine that is both plush and complex, every bit a modern Napa Cabernet, with bold dark elements that harken back to the days of old California.
